My top three energy boosting juice recipes

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – juicing (vegetables) isn’t just ‘another trend’, but a really efficient way of drastically upping your intake of very healthy stuff. Many times over have I been convinced of its power.

Last month, I very unfortunately had to go on antibiotics for a week, and as always I wasn’t reacting well to it. It is terribly draining for my system in every way.  When it was over, I felt an urgent need to boost my health and help to reset what the antibiotics undoubtedly had harmed.

Drinking lots of vegetable juice is the most efficient way I’ve come across to quickly get back on track after phases of indulgences or bad health. My experience is that it always leads to pretty immediate improvements in terms of both energy levels and overall mood. Whether you do a strict fast with only juices or simply just add them to your normal diet, it will make you feel much better, quickly. Clearer mind, stronger body, makes for happier times. I cannot recommend it enough.

For the sake of the powerful antioxidants – which to a large extent is what you are after when juicing –  I have found it to be a good idea to focus on colour when choosing ingredients (did you know the colour of the vegetable indicates what kind of antioxidant you get from it?). This also helps as a guide to create extra juice deliciousness.

Some general points I always stick to when juicing: I almost always include one apple, either lemon or lime and I end with a little coconut water which I rinse through the juicer in the end. And I only use organic produce, as fresh as possible. Apart from that, I will pretty much go with what ever else I have at home….. I recommend you to mix and match until you come up with your personal favourites. But until then, here are a few refreshing, boosting, delicious, antioxidant packed juice recipes that I am pretty sure just about anyone will appreciate.


THE ORANGE JUICE (without oranges)
The orange juice is packed with the antioxidant beta carotene, important for anyone desiring glowing skin, a well functioning immune system and good vision. And did you know that a Harvard study from 2007 suggests that long-term high intake of beta carotene is linked to lower risk of cognitive decline (memory loss, dementia etc)?
  • 5 large carrots
  • 2 thumb sized pieces of ginger
  • 2 limes (peeled)
  • 2 apples
  • 1 cup coconut water
  1. Wash and peel as needed and run through your juicer. End with the coconut water. Drink immediately.





The green juice
The green juice is packed with the antioxidant chlorophyl, mainly thanks to all the leafy greens it contains. Leafy greens - the healthiest of things to eat - is important for such a long list of health reasons including fighting cancer, heart disease, diabetes and inflammation. It is my number one go-to juice to re-energize and it tastes much better than what one might think. A recent study published in the peer reviewed medical journal Nature Immunology supports earlier claims that a high intake of leafy greens is very important to protect you from an array of health problems. The conclusion states: Eating your greens may be even more important that previously thought, with the discovery that an immune cell population essential for intestinal health could be controlled by leafy greens in your diet.
  • 6 to 7 large leaves of chard (or any leafy green - lots of it. You can not add too much. If I use for example spinach I normally include at least 5 large handfuls)
  • 1 large handful of parsley (optional - the flavour is pretty strong, so perhaps start out easy in the beginning by adding a little less.)
  • ½ cucumber
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 1 lemon, peeled
  • 1 apple
  • 1 thumb-sized ginger
  • 1 cup coconut water
  1. Wash and peel as needed and run through your juicer. End with the coconut water. Drink immediately.

The purple juice
The purple juice is packed with antioxidants betalain and anthocyanins which both are shown in studies (e.g. here and here) to protect the body from an array of health issues incl. inflammation. Both beets and purple cabbage are real nutritional power houses and juicing them is a good way to ensure a higher intake.
  • ½ head of red cabbage
  • 1 large red beet
  • 1 apple
  • 1 thumb-sized giner
  • 1 lime, peeled
  • 1 cup coconut water
  1. Wash and peel all vegetables as needed and run through the juicer. End with the coconut water. Drink immediately.
